Responsible Recycler Scheme Raises Its Game

From January 1st 2009 the Tyre Industry Federation's Responsible Recycler Scheme (RRS) will introduce new more stringent standards of audit and compliance for its accredited members. The RRS is policed and administered by the TRA under an agreement with the Federation. Introduced in 2000 the RRS is a groundbreaking voluntary best practice programme aimed at all those whose business it is to collect, recycle or reprocess end of life tyres. From small beginnings the Scheme and its members today account for a praiseworthy 73% of the UK's recovery tyre arisings.

Under the existing scheme, members were already subject to regular audit to check their levels of regulatory compliance and to set an industry benchmark for best practice in tyre recovery. The new scheme to be launched on January 1st 2009 will set new and enhanced standards for operational compliance, more frequent and detailed audits and provide further assurance to those tyre businesses choosing RRS accredited collectors that their scrap tyres will be reused or recycled in ways which conform and exceed all current regulations and operation requirements.

Adoption of this, newly strengthened Responsible Recycler regime by TRA members will be voluntary but those choosing to join will be rewarded with annual accreditation in the form of a yearly certificate which can be displayed at retail collection points and on members vehicles as well as on the Association's website www.tyrerecovery.org.

Tyre retailers too will be able to display these new certificates to their customers if they choose to contract with an RRS ‘Chartermark' collector.

For more information on the TRA and TIF Responsible Recycler Scheme please contact Peter Taylor, TRA Secretary on 020 7457 5040.
